It is common knowledge for One Piece fans, that Blackbeard is always trying to steal other people's devil fruits. The devil fruit, besides being used by Blackbeard himself, he also gave to the rest of his crew. An example is the Suke Suke no Mi fruit that originally belonged to Absalom is now in Shiryu's hands.

Blackbeard realized that there were many devil fruits that he needed to master in this world. Because of that, he then ordered his crew to look for the devil fruit. Jesus Burgess is one of Blackbeard's crew whom he assigned to steal the devil fruit. And the devil fruit he had tried to steal was the Mera Mera no Mi, as seen in the Dressrosa arc yesterday.

Since Jesus Burgess has no other power than physical strength, he only relies on it to steal his devil fruit. However, what is interesting is how Jesus Burgess always seems to carry a knife and a pouch. How then can he steal someone else's devil fruit with those two things?

How Burgess Steals a Devil Fruit in One Piece

Is the way Jesus Burgess stole the devil fruit the same way that Blackbeard did? What was the function of the knife he always carried with him? Why does Burgess always carry a mysterious pouch? What's in the bag? Those are probably some of the big questions that arise related to Burgess's attempt to steal the devil fruit, which is a task given by Blackbeard.

However, how Jesus Burgess tried to get someone else's devil fruit could be the same as what Blackbeard did. He will finish off his enemy first and then he will take the power of his devil fruit. We can see this from Absalom's death, where the power of his Suke Suke no Mi was stolen by Blackbeard and then he gave it to Shiryu.

The fact that Absalom died is interesting because maybe that's the only way to steal someone else's devil fruit. The most obvious example is when he was about to steal the Gura Gura no Mi devil fruit from Whitebeard's figure. Blackbeard waited until Whitebeard died and then he took his power.

This method is still not confirmed with certainty, but it seems like a plausible scenario. After killing the previous person or devil fruit user, the power will then enter the nearest fruit. Perhaps this is the reason why Jesus Burgess always carried a knife with him wherever he went. For example, he wielded a knife while trying to kill Luffy in the Dressrosa arc.

He tries to kill his target's life. And then, after the target is killed, the power of the devil fruit will return to the nearest fruit. Jesus Burgess also always carried a mysterious bag, which maybe the contents of the bag were ordinary fruit. The fruit will then become a medium for the previous devil fruit power. That way, Burgess doesn't have to bother looking for the devil fruit from the previous owner.
Blackbeard Knows It All

Jesus Burgess certainly didn't necessarily know about the method to steal the devil fruit. Because, Burgess has no history of stealing devil fruits. Or also he was never known to have plans to steal the devil fruit since it first appeared. Then, who then taught Burgess all things related to stealing devil fruit powers?

None other than the figure of Blackbeard. How then Blackbeard found out about this is still a mystery. Either Blackbeard knew it from the encyclopedia he read or maybe he knew from someone else. To be sure, with all of Blackbeard's knowledge of devil fruits he was the one who taught Jesus Burgess how to steal devil fruits.
