Eiichiro Oda Reveals Behind Monkey D Luffy's Gear Fifth

Monkey D Luffy succeeded in bringing up Gear Fifth when the Wano Arc in the One Piece manga ended.  Earlier this week, the One Piece manga officially started the final saga of the One Piece franchise which has been going on since 1997.

During the One Piece Day festival last weekend, manga creator Eiichiro Oda answered a fan's question regarding the reason behind Luffy's new Gear Fifth or Gear Fifth form.

Luffy turns out to have a secret power in his devil fruit. This allows him to transform into a new, more powerful form. In fact, Luffy can be anything with his new abilities.

In an interview, Eiichiro Oda said he had been thinking about Luffy's fifth Gear since many years ago.  He bluntly said Luffy's Gear fifth transformation was a big deal for him.

"Initially I wanted to play around when there was a Luffy battle and it binds the elements as they form," said Eiichiro Oda.

He said when drawing Luffy, he often thought of making various transformations of his powers.

"I often draw thinking that it's okay if people oppose Gear Monkey D Luffy. During the battle, I put a lot of symbols in, for example giving a light bulb sign when a character thinks about something," said Oda.

"Or make a character's legs spin like a car is running. Fans point to how the manga references this ridiculous new power," he continued.

With the power of Gear fifth, Luffy seems to be able to become anything, or any form he wishes.  One Piece manga readers were also surprised by the change.

Now the One Piece manga has entered its 1054th chapter and has reached the Final Saga.  In the latest chapter, Luffy immediately enters a new adventure in search of One Piece treasure.  Shanks also appeared and started looking for Luffy with a different purpose.
