One Piece: Getting to Know the Cursed Swords!

In the world of One Piece, the sword user is one of the most respected figures.  For example, we know Dracule Mihawk who is the best swordsman in the world.  Or maybe the figure of Ryuma who is the god of the sword from Wano.  The sword seems to have a deep connection with various events in the story, and is an important element.

Although the sword is one of the main weapons for many characters, but not all swords have the same toughness.  Each sword has its own category.  There are approximately three classifications/categories of swords in the One Piece story.  The first is the Meito or popular sword.  The second is the Kokuto sword or black sword.  And lastly is Yoto's sword or cursed.

Knowing the Cursed Sword

Yoto's sword or what can be interpreted as a cursed sword / mysterious sword, is a sword that is said to have a curse.  In the story, the curse of the sword will be felt by the wielder of the sword.  Many people then believe in this mystical story, where even in the end people tend to avoid some swords so as not to be cursed.

However, over time the explanation of this sword began to be revealed.  Based on what Shimotsuki Kozaburo said in the previous chapter, the various curses on a sword can be avoided if the user's luck is superior, or the user has a will that is far greater than the sword's will.

And Kouzaburo himself said that swords should have horror.  Because, the main purpose of the sword itself is to take the life or kill the lives of others.  If they are not able to control it, then they will be controlled by the sword.

Various Cursed Swords

Eiichiro Oda himself has introduced several cursed swords throughout the story.  

Kikoku 

This is a sword belonging to Trafalgar Law.  Unfortunately, until now we still don't know what the sword's rank is.  In appearance, Kikoku is a larger version of the katana.  Due to its large size, Law often carried it and then kept it on the shoulder.  Sometimes, he also asks his crew, such as Bepo, to carry him. 

In one of the SBS columns, Oda Sensei confirmed that Kikoku is one of Yoto's swords or cursed swords.  And just like Enma now, it seems Law has managed to subdue Kikoku so he can control it at will.  We can see this in the various battles that Law does, such as when he faced Big Mom.

Sandai Kitetsu

Due to having a bad image as a cursed sword, this sword was not originally traded by Ipponmatsu.  However, because Zoro needed it, he finally continued to force it by doing a luck test.  The sword was thrown at him and Zoro had to give up any part of his body when hit by the sword.

However, it turns out that the sword did not hit Zoro's limbs at all, which surprised Ipponmatsu.  Finally, this sword belongs to Zoro.  The interesting thing about this sword is that, although Sandai Kitetsu is of a lower level than Yubashiri, its durability is stronger.  It is proven until now that the sword is in Zoro's waist.

Nidai Kitetsu

Besides Sandai Kitetsu, another Kitetsu sword that is also included in the cursed sword or Yoto is Nidai Kitetsu.  Nidai Kitetsu itself is a sword made by a famous swordsman named Kotetsu.  This sword is one of the 21 high-end swords, the same as Shisui and Enma's swords.  This katana was "borrowed" by Luffy for a while, before finally being returned to its rightful owner.

Nidai Kitetsu has incredible sharpness and strength, to the point that Luffy can cut other swords with ease.  In fact, Luffy is not an expert at using a sword.  Many fans have speculated that Nidai Kitetsu might be one of Zoro's swords after the Wano arc ends.

There is still no information until now what makes a sword can be a cursed sword.  According to Kozaburo's explanation, a sword does have its own personality.  However, is it part of the curse process?  We still have to wait for the confirmation from Oda Sensei.
